Dr. Abdul Hamid Samra is the Imam and Director of Religious Services at MCA’s Islamic Center of Greater Miami (ICGM) in Miami Gardens, Florida. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Miami.
In July of 2012, Dr. Samra returned to join MCA as our principal resident scholar, a position he previously held between 2000 and 2006. Dr. Samra is married and a father of four.
Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Samra memorized the Glorious Quran at the age of 16. He also received his diploma in Hahfizul Quran with perfection from his teacher Hafiz Mouhi Uddin Al Kurdi in Damascus, Syria.
Dr. Samra received his Islamic education from the Institute of Zaid Bin Thabit Alansari (IZBTA) in Damascus, Syria. He spent many years in learning and teaching Arabic language, Fiqh (Jurisprudence), Tafseer (Commentary, Interpretation, and Explanation). Tajweed (proper pronunciation of the holly Quran), Aquida (Islamic Creed), Sirah & Hadith (life and the examples of the prophet), and Islamic ethics under the supervision of the renowned Muslim scholar Sheik Abdul Kareem Al Refai.
Most recently, he was the Dean of Engineering at Yarmouk Private University in Damascus, Syria. Dr. Samra is also a former faculty member of the Department of Electrical Engineering at Florida International University. Previously, besides MCA, he served as an Imam at the Islamic Center of Mid Kansas in Wichita, Kansas, as well at the Islamic School of Miami/Masjid An-Noor (Kendall). Dr. Samra also taught adults and children at many Islamic teaching facilities in Syria, India, Saudi Arabia, and in the US. He has been instrumental in bringing many communities together. He regularly participates in multi-faith forums, not just to raise awareness about Islam to other faiths, but also to build bridges among the clergies and social organizations in the community.
Dr. Samra enjoys working with people. He strongly believes that we should not only be religiously knowledgeable but also pursue professional education in business, science and technology. He received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from Wichita State University in 1991 and has taught at a number of national and international universities. He is currently teaching Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Miami.
Dr. Samra speaks fluent Arabic, English & French and even dabbles in Spanish. He enjoys traveling and learning about other cultures and languages. In addition, he enjoys playing tennis, as well as swimming.
